Who we are and
how we operate?

Established in 1992 by Peter and Alida Quigley, Ausprey Tours provides a personalised, fully guided service for the experienced and aspiring angler wanting to fish for wild brown and rainbow trout in Tasmania's unspoilt natural environment.
Ausprey Tours has appeared on Channel Nine's Getaway Program and is represented at  interstate fishing shows.  Ausprey prides itself in providing one of the most professional trout guiding services in Tasmania. This in turn has ensured that Ausprey is the preferred operator for Tasmania's Temptations Holidays and Qantas Tasmanian Holidays.

GUIDING TEAM

Peter QuigleyPeter Quigley (Guide/Owner - Manager)

Peter has been trout fishing in Tasmania for over 35 years and trout guiding professionally for 10 years. Peter has been a member of the Trout Guides and Lodges Tasmania since 1992 and during that time has held the following executive positions of Committee Member, Secretary, Vice President and President. Peter regularly represents the TGALT at fishing shows in Melbourne and Sydney. By profession, Peter is a teacher and has taught in high school and in senior secondary colleges for the last 24 years. He has a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education, a Master of Education and holds a Tasmanian Teachers Certificate.  Away from education and fishing, Peter takes a keen interest in his family, bushwalking and musical theatre. 
 

Jamie Cochrane  (Leading guide)

Jamie has been trout fishing in Tasmania for over thirty years. He has been guiding for Ausprey Tours for the past three fishing seasons and averages 90 to100 guiding days per year.
His passion for angling and his undoubted knowledge of the Tasmanian fishery is clearly evident when guiding Ausprey clients. He is also a creative fly tyer and has developed some very effective patterns over the past few years.  His patient and caring nature and constant willingness to master new waters and fishing techniques will ensure that all clients, whether advanced or beginner, will leave with better skills and knowledge of fly fishing and the Tasmanian fishery in general.

Ashley Artis (Specialist Guide)

Ashley is the Australasian rod builder for Thomas and Thomas Rods and importer of fine quality fly fishing products for the Australian retail market.  He has taught fly-fishing and fly-casting for Adult Education for many years.  His knowledge of the state's trout fishery and local fishing methods is extensive and this will ensure a highly rewarding fly fishing experience.

Jack Barker (Specialist Guide)

An Ausprey guide for three seasons, Jack is a holder of a Tasmania Day Medal for his contribution to Tasmanian Trout Fishing.

ACCREDITATION

For your personal safety Ausprey Tours has:
  • Completed the Accreditation Program endorsed by the Tourism Council of Tasmania;
  • Public Liability Insurance;
  • Registered Public vehicles;
  • Registered Guides with Public Vehicle Licences;
  • Boats under MAST survey;
  • Registered Guides with Limited Coxswains Licences;
  • Registered Guides with Senior First Aid Certificates;
  • A Department of Primary Industries, Water and Environment;Commercial Visitor Service Licence and
  • Been approved as an Inland Fisheries Service Licence Selling Agent

EQUIPMENT

Ausprey prides itself on providing it clients some of the best equipment available in the Tasmanian professional trout guiding industry.

Vehicles

  • Holden Jackeroo Turbo Diesel 4WD 
  • Mitsubishi Star Wagon 4WD
  • Subaru 4WD Station wagon

Boats

  • Purpose Built Maritime Marine tri hull equipped with casting decks and a 40 hp Honda four stoke engine. Equipped with mini Kubota electric auxiliary.
  • Other boats (under current MAST survey) are also used on demand.

Central Highlands Accommodation

  • The Ausprey Angler's Cabin.

When staying in Launceston Ausprey recommends the following accommodation:

Fishing Equipment

  •  Rods brands supplied include Pro Angler, Thomas and Thomas and Strudwick.

  •  Fly lines used are Cortland.
  •  Fly vests used are Columbia.
  •  Waders supplied are Horne and Fly 'n Dry.
  •  Life Jackets are Stormy Seas.
  •  Camping equipment is Macpac, Kathmandu, Wilderness Equipment.

Wilderness Fishing

CODE OF ETHICS

1. Quality of Service

Guides make at every effort is made to ensure that their client/s are given every possible opportunity to catch trout during the course of their stay.
 

2. Fishing with Clients

A guide shall not fish with a client unless:
  1. they are invited to fish by their client during the course of the guided fishing trip;
  2. they are demonstrating casting, fishing gear or a fishing technique;
  3. they have indicated to the client through correspondence that their guide will be fishing with them during the course of their guided fishing trip. 

3. Standard of Accommodation

Any accommodation provided is to meet the minimum standards of cleanliness, hygiene and provide basic ablution facilities as set down by the Department of Tourism.
 

4. Alcohol

Guides must abide by the requirements of the Road Safety (Alcohol and Drugs) Act 1970, which states that drivers of public vehicles must not drive a public vehicle after drinking any alcohol.  Guides should not drive a boat after drinking any alcohol.
 

5. Dress

Guides should always wear clean and neat clothing appropriate to the service being provided to the client.
 

6. Vehicles, Boats and other Equipment

Guides should ensure that their vehicles, boats and other equipment are kept in a clean, safe and reliable condition. All necessary State and Federal licences must be taken out and kept renewed.
 

7. Fisheries Regulations

All guides must abide by all state laws when with a client and make every effort to ensure that their clients abide by such laws.
 

8. Catch and Release

Guides should promote a catch and release policy where applicable but, at the same time, respect the wishes of any client who may want to kill a legal size trout.
 

9. Environment 

Ausprey Tours will:
  • Be efficient in the use of natural resources (water, energy, etc);
  • Ensure waste disposal has minimum environmental and aesthetic impacts;
  • Recycle and reuse where possible;
  • Keep abreast of current political and environmental issues in areas in which we operate;
  • Employ guides who are well-versed and respectful of local cultures and environments, particularly indigenous culture and flora and fauna species;
  • Keep vehicles to designated roads and trails;
  • Abide by the rules and regulations of the natural areas;
  • Respect the rights of private landowners and seek permission before entering private land and
  • Support the minimal impact bushwalking code.
