BACKPACKING TOURS - Western Lakes camping for 3 or more days

Establishing camp on a wilderness lake.

Fish for wild brown trout in a World Heritage area that is only accessible by foot.  The Western Lakes are a collective group of 3000 alpine lakes and tarns. This unique wilderness environment with it's gin clear waters, offers a very special setting for angling, bushwalking and camping. Ausprey Tours provides all quality backpacking gear suitable for the Tasmanian environment. Our backpacking tours depart from Launceston and we collect clients from the airport or their place of accommodation. We suggest that you arrive the day before the tour commences so that we can pack your packs.  This will allow us to depart early on day one of your trip. Fly fishing in the Western Lakes is mostly sight fishing, which can be challenging to anglers who are not used to it. If you are after bucket loads of fish then, this trip is not for you. It's a different fishing experience! The walking grade is easy to moderate.  You do have to carry your own pack so having a good level of fitness makes for a good trip!

A suggested itinerary.

Western Lakes Backpacking Tour - 3 or more days (operates from mid December to early March)
Pack backpacks evening before departing on tour.
From Launceston a 2 hour drive to Lake MacKenzie. Then a 2-hour walk over fairly even terrain before meeting the first of the lakes, Blue Peaks. Camp will be set up in our usual place and then fishing gets underway with clients being able to explore many of the small alpine lakes and tarns such as Blue Peaks and Lakes Halkyard. The Julian system of lakes is within walking distance of Blue Peaks.  All our walking tours are weather dependent.  Ideally we would suggest a minimum of three days for our Western Lakes Backpacker Explorer trip.

Supplied Gear List for Western Lakes Backpacking Tour

  • 1 pack (adjustable harness)  1 tent (Macpac Olympus) share arrangement
  • 1 sleeping bag (down)
  • 1 sleeping mat (Therm-a-rest)  1 pair gaiters
  • 1 inner sheet    1 day pack
  • 1 Trangia stove    1 fuel bottle
  • 1 mess kit (cutlery, bowl, mug)  1 trowel
  • 2 stuff sacks    1 whistle
  • 1 torch and batteries
  • Fishing gear- spin and fly.

Some clients prefer to use their own backpacking and fishing gear.  We check that it is suitable for the Tasmanian bushwalking environment.  Our guides carry other essential equipment such as First Aid kits, space blankets, toilet paper etc. The average pack weight is between 12 and 15 kgs.
A complete list of recommended items clients should bring will be sent after confirmation of the booking. Clients will be required to complete a personal medical information form.

Walking in the wilderness in Tasmania means being prepared for all types of weather conditions.  It is important not to skimp on clothing but also not to overload the pack.
